Here are some ideas on meeting the spending requirement:
What Are Expedia Rewards Points Worth?
As with many travel rewards cards, the value of your points can vary greatly. It all depends on how you use your rewards. I value each Expedia Rewards point at around $0.01. This number is the average value of one point when redeemed for various rewards.
You can redeem your points towards Expedia bookings. This includes flights, hotel stays, car rentals and vacation packages. You also have the option to shop discounted tours and attractions.
Feeling philanthropic? Donate your Expedia Rewards points to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The non-profit organization helps to treat and defeat childhood cancer and other deadly diseases.
The best way to use your points is to use them towards VIP Access hotel stays. Why? Because your Expedia Rewards points are worth double in value ($0.02) when you use them this way. Plus, as an Expedia Rewards silver member, you’ll get 250 bonus points for booking your stay at a VIP Access hotel.
Travel hackers will find joy in maximizing their Expedia Rewards points. If that doesn’t sound like you, you might be much better off with a general travel rewards credit card (I’ve got suggestions below).
Citi Expedia® Rewards Card Benefits
As a Citi Expedia Rewards cardholder, you get complimentary silver status. This elite membership provides an extended hotel price guarantee, spa discounts, dedicated concierge service in select areas and more. With silver status, you’ll also earn more Expedia Rewards points:
- 10% bonus points on eligible bookings
- 250 bonus points for VIP Access hotel bookings
- Redeem for 2x value on VIP Access hotels
To illustrate the earning power of silver status membership, let’s say you purchased a $1,000 vacation package on Expedia:
Category | Citi Expedia Rewards Card | Without Card |
2x base points (loyalty program) | 2,000 | 2,000 |
3x bonus points (card) | 3,000 | 0 |
10% bonus points (silver status) | 200 | 0 |
Total points | 5,200 | 2,000 |
Estimated value | $52 | $20 |
Maximized value | $104 | $40 |
And that’s not including the 250 bonus points you’d get if you redeem for a VIP Access hotel stay. As you can see, it pays to have Expedia Rewards silver status.
The Citi Expedia Rewards Card comes with no annual fees. If you use your points well, this card can yield a rewards rate that tops all other no-annual-fee cards.
Bottom Line
The Citi Expedia® Rewards Card provides you with additional benefits such as no annual fees, Citi Private Pass, Expedia+ silver status and much more. Use this card to book your next flight, hotel, rental, or more with Expedia!
Although this card has a lot of potential for great rewards, keep in mind it suffers from some pitfalls such as a:
- Complicated rewards structure. Booking hotel stays will be a little complicated because Expedia categorizes its hotels in different ways. Make sure to pick the ones that will get you the most value – both for earning and redeeming points.
- Foreign transaction fee. If you’re travelling abroad, bring another card that doesn’t come with any foreign transaction fees. With this card, you’ll get hit with a 3% charge.
